Biography

Massad Anwar is one of the prominent Egyptian Islamic preachers and presneter of a number of television programs such as the Mercy Channel where he exposes religious lessons in Islam.

Anwar and his son were arrested by the security forces in his house at Hadayek al-Qobba. The Salafi preacher Abd al-Rahman Mansur confirmed their arrest but the authorities did not confirm the arrest itself, nor issued any official statements about it.

The prosecution confronted him with some evidence from the investigations indicating his implication and financing of a group founded in contravention of the constitution, incitement to commit crimes of violence, terrorism, murder and spreading chaos in the country as well as his role in the Brotherhood demonstrations. Massad Anwar denied everything and said that he does not have any connection with the Muslim Brotherhood. Since the demonstrations of June 30, 2013 in Egypt, he said “demonstrations are forbidden by law”. Anwar was released after 6 hours of interrogation.

Evidence of Hate Speech/Incitement:

January 2013: Anwar stated in a video that misguided people have invented Valentine’s day to missguide Muslims. He added that the occasion was invented by pagans during the Roman civilisation. Anwar said that youth shouldn’t celebrate Valentine’s day also due to the fact that Muslims shouldn’t participate or celebrate infidels’ occasions.

March 2012: In a video posted on Youtube, the cleric describes the alleged expansion of Shiism in Egypt as a threat and poison that should be confronted.
