Salih Al Fawzan
Biography
Saleh Al Fawzan is an Islamic scholar from Saudi Arabia. Born in 1933, he has been a member of many high religious entities in KSA and is considered as the most senior scholar of Islam in the country. He is currently a member of the Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Issuing Fatwas, a committee of the Council of Senior Scholars that advises the king on religious matters.
Al Fawzan studied in the newly opened ash-Qamariyah school in 1948. In 1950, he was appointed a teacher at the Faysaliyyah school in Buraydah after completing his studies there. Afterwards, he joined the Educational Institute in Buraydah from 1952 till 1956. In 1960, he graduated from the faculty of Sharia at the Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh. Then he earned a Master’s and doctorate in Fiqh from the same University.
After completing his doctorate, he became a teacher at the faculty of Shari’a at the Imam Muhammad educational Institute in Riyadh then at the Department for Higher Studies within the Faculty of the Principles of the Religion (usool ad-deen). Later, he was appointed the head of Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court of Justice before returning to teaching when his period of headship finished.
In 2013, he became a member of Saudi Arabia’s highest religious body - the Council of Senior Scholars.
He is also one of the prominent and major scholars on the Nur Ala al-Darb radio program where fatwas are given by a number of Islamic scholars. The program has been described as “one of the oldest and most famous programs broadcast on the Quran radio channel”.

Evidence of Hate Speech/Incitement:
November 2019: In a short video from one of his Friday Sermons, Al Fawzan described women as temptation agents that should be protected from evil. According to the cleric, women should not mix with men in offices, streets, or any other public space. Furthermore, he said that women shouldn’t decide for themselves on what to wear, or what to do.
March 2014: In a Friday Sermon on the necessity of upholding to the religion of Islam, the cleric stated that Shia Muslims and practitioners of Sufism are polytheists despite their claim that they are Muslims.
June 2014: Al Fawzan criticises Muslims (liberals) who say that people should be free to choose their beliefs and describes them as enemies of Islam.
