After Russia’s full-scale invasion, global interest in Ukraine has grown, and so has the number of companies claiming to be “Ukrainian.” Unfortunately, not all of them truly are. Some businesses based in other countries use the word “Ukrainian” in their name or marketing to attract clients who want to support Ukraine or work with authentic local experts. So, how can you tell whether a Ukrainian translation company is genuinely based in Ukraine?
1. Check the company registration
Real Ukrainian businesses are legally registered in Ukraine. You can verify this through the Ukrainian Unified State Register of Legal Entities (accessible online). If the company’s registration country is something else, for example, Poland, Estonia, or the UK, then it’s not technically Ukrainian, even if it employs Ukrainian linguists.
2. Look at the address and contact details
A legitimate Ukrainian translation company will have a physical address in Ukraine, typically in Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, or another major city, and a Ukrainian phone number (+380…). If the only contact is a Gmail address or a foreign phone number, that’s a reason to be cautious.
3. Review their team and leadership
Visit the company’s website and LinkedIn profiles. Where are their managers and project coordinators located? Are they actually in Ukraine? Are they active in local professional communities or conferences? Real Ukrainian companies are usually well connected within the country’s translation industry.
4. Check industry visibility
Reliable Ukrainian providers are known internationally. Look for their presence in Slator, Nimdzi, or Common Sense Advisory rankings, or check if they participate in Ukrainian Association of Translators and Interpreters or similar local organizations. Transparency is key, serious companies don’t hide their identity.
5. Ask directly
A reputable company won’t hesitate to confirm where they operate from. Ask simple questions: Where is your office located? How do you ensure business continuity during power outages? Genuine Ukrainian companies will answer easily — because they’ve lived through these realities.
