Houthi Movement
The Houthi movement is an armed Islamist terrorist organisation based in Yemen. A large Zaydi Shia clan originating from Yemen’s northern Saada province, the group originally sought to revive Zaydi traditions in Yemen in opposition to Salafi influence from neighbouring Saudi Arabia in the 1980s and 1990s.
Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb
AQIM is a Salafi-Jihadist organisation that aims to overthrow governments in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and Mali and the establishment of an Islamic Caliphate. The group’s attacks have shown significant interest in targeting security forces of these countries. Foreign nationals, particularly those from countries such as France and the US, continue to be a high priority of the group.
Daesh-Khorasan
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, known by its Arabic acronym Daesh in Khorasan - or Daesh-K, named after an old term of the region, is an affiliate of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) active in South Asia and Central Asia. First appearing in Afghanistan in late 2014, the group announced its expansion to the Khorasan region in 2015, which encompasses parts of Iran, Central Asia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
CAGE UK (Cageprisoners)
CAGE UK is a London-based advocacy group that, according to its website, “seeks to empower communities touched by the War on Terror.” It is also stated that the organisation “highlights and works against governmental policies adopted as part of the War on Terror, seeking for a society free of oppression and injustice.” According to its Director, Dr. Adnan Siddiqui, CAGE UK was founded to raise awareness of the situation of prisoners, with a focus on Muslims, imprisoned at Guantánamo Bay and abroad, and that it has worked closely with former US detainees as well as campaigns on behalf of current inmates held without trial.
Islamic Relief Worldwide
Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW), an “independent humanitarian and development organisation” that operates in over 40 countries. A British registered charity located with Headquarters in Birmingham, IRW is active in lobbying the United Nations.
Muslim Brotherhood (MB)
The Muslim Brotherhood is a transnational political organisation tracing its roots to Egypt in 1928, and with current outfits and affiliates across the majority of Arab countries in the form of political parties - whether outlawed or currently holding seats in parliament.
