Biography

Pia Kjærsgaard is a Danish politician who was elected to the Folketing (Danish parliament) in 1984, serving the Copenhagen County constituency from 1984 to 1987 and subsequently the Funen County electorate from 1987 to 1995.

In 1995, Kjærsgaard co-founded the right-wing party Dansk Folkeparti (DF). In 1997, she ran as the DF candidate in the Glostrup nomination district, and from 1997 to 2005, she ran in the Hellerup and Gentofte nomination district. She was re-elected to the parliament as a DF candidate, serving the Funen County constituency from 1995 to 1998. By 2001, DF had risen to become the third-largest party in the parliament, with 12% of the total votes. The DF’S vote share increased to 13.2% in the 2005 election, with Kjrsgaard earning 38,347 individual votes.

Following the triumph of Kjærsgaard’s party in the June 2015 parliamentary election, she was chosen the first female speaker of the Folketing on July 3, 2015. Kjærsgaard was recommended by both the four parties backing Lars Løkke Rasmussen’s new administration and the Social Democrats and the Greenlandic Siumut in opposition.

Kjærsgaard’s most vocal political aims are to limit immigration to Denmark, particularly Arab immigrants. Her stance on immigration has prompted comparisons to politicians such as Jean-Marie Le Pen in France and Pim Fortuyn in the Netherlands.

Evidence of Hate Speech/Incitement:

May 2020: In an article written by Pia Kjærsgaard, she attacks Somali and Lebanese immigrants in Denmark by claiming that ‘non-western foreigners’, especially Arabs, came to Denmark with a savagery background that threatens the Danish culture, its heritage, and sovereignty - “not all immigrants from non-Western nations pose a threat to the country’s overall cohesion. It is not the Chinese, Thais, or Indians that are generating the difficulties. They come from a culture where people are expected to act appropriately, be modest, and take pleasure in not being a burden to society. On the other side, Somalis and Lebanese, for example, are the ones who are causing problems.”

February 2020: In an article by Pia Kjærsgaard, preceded with the tagline “Denmark is evolving into an immigrant country,” she frequently used racism and hate speech against Arabs in Denmark. She claims that “Danes need to be able to speak Arabic to pronounciate the names on the shopfronts.” She also asserts that “don’t expect to be greeted by a foreign servant or cashier who speaks Danish,” and that “Arab guys cause fear and insecurity in the shopping centres with their  “masculine mentality.”

August 2014: In an interview on DR Nyheder - Deadine, Pia Kjærsgaard clearly states that she is unquestionably against wearing hijab by Muslim girls and women in Denmark, “absolutely not in public institutions such as schools and colleges.” She even said that wearing a hijab would hinder them from properly assimilating into Danish society.

January 2010: Pia Kjærsgaard clearly stated in an interview with the Information that she has no problem categorising her party DF as anti-Muslim. She further claimed that she finds it tremendously difficult to distinguish between Islam as a religion and Islamism as an extremist ideology as she believes they are tightly connected to each other. Kjærsgaard concluded her interview by saying “we believe that Islam is a religion that has such a strong influence on people’s daily lives. As a result, we do not believe that Islam should acquire traction in Denmark under any circumstances.”
