Nayef Al Ajmi
Biography
Dr. Al Ajmi holds a bachelor’s degree from the College of Sharia at Kuwait University in 1996. In 2004, he obtained a PhD from the Academy of Science at the University of Cairo. Al Ajmi served as an Assistant Dean at the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies at the University of Kuwait. He is also a member of the Sharia supervisory boards of a number of investment corporations in Kuwait, including Imtiyaz Investment Group, Werba Bank, Kuwaiti Corporation for Real Estate, and Beyou for Investment.
In 2014, Al Ajmi was appointed as Minister of Justice and Islamic Affairs. However, he resigned three months after his appointment following US accusations of funding terrorism in Syria against him. Al Ajmi called the accusations “baseless and groundless”. Furthermore, the preacher is known for his anti-semic statements against Jews and his support for Jihad in Syria against the Iranian and Russian backed regime led by Bashar Al Assad. Al Ajmi has reportedly helped raise funds for extremist militants in Syria. As a response to reports accusing him of supporting terrorism in Syria, Al Ajmi has dissociated himself from Kuwait Preachers’ Organisation, an association supporting the Islamic Front in Syria, a militant group which rejects human legislation in favor of Sharia law and advocates ethnic cleansing against non-Sunni communities in Syria. On 15 September 2013, Nayef announced
That he only endorses another Kuwait-based fundraising organisation called the Council of Supporters for the Syrian Revolution. The fund is managed by a former MP in the Kuwaiti Parliament named Mohammed Hayef al Mutairy, a salafi, a parliamentarian, and the secretary general of the Council of Supporters of the Syrian Revolution, a group that has provided support to several Salafi armed groups in the Damascus countryside.
