Biography

Katie Olivia Hopkins is a British writer and media personality. She rose to prominence as a divisive candidate on the BBC show “The Apprentice.” After graduating from school, she went on to study economics at the University of Exeter, and on weekends, she participated in the “Officer's Training Camps.” She underwent military training at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. She was unable to take up her commission position because it was revealed during the pass out that she suffered from epilepsy. She featured in a couple more reality series after her debut, “The Apprentice,” and subsequently worked as a writer for British newspapers “The Sun,” and later, “Mail Online.”

Her opinions about Muslims and immigrants, expressed in her columns and tweets, were divisive on several occasions. Her frequent remarks against Scots, dementia sufferers, and migrants sparked outrage, protests, and petitions. The “Homicide and Major Crime Command” interrogated her under caution due to suspicions of encouraging racial prejudice against immigrants. She was fired as a broadcaster for the “LBC” radio station after making Anti-Muslim comments regarding the “Manchester Arena Bombing.” On several occasions, the newspapers who hired her were forced to pay damages and legal fees to the targets of her claims. She now writes for the Canadian website “The Rebel Media,” a far-right global platform that produces online “Anti-Muslim ideology” content.

Evidence of Hate Speech/Incitement:

June 2020: A signed petition was forwarded to Twitter, urging the tech giant to remove the far-right commentator from the platform, accusing her of breaking the site’s rules on hate speech and incitement. Her views on race, religion, and immigration have provoked uproar on several occasions.

March 2017: Hopkins delivered a speech at a David Horowitz Freedom Center event in March 2017 in which she criticized Muslims, claiming that a “Muslim mafia” dominated sections of Britain and referring to London Mayor Sadiq Khan as the “Muslim mayor of Londonistan.” Hopkins urged people to “fight for your nation” against Muslims, saying, “we can commit to arming ourselves, not just with the aid of the NRA,” adding, “be mad and fight back.”

March 2017: Hopkins is also known for being a fan of anti-multiculturalism. Following the 2017 London Bridge attack, Hopkins chastised “Liberals in London,” saying they “actually think multiculturalism means we all die together” and were “so desperately wedded to the multicultural illusion that (they) can only fight those who love the country the most, blame those who are most proud to be British.”

July 2016: Hopkins is well-known for her anti-Islam views. After the 2016 Nice truck attack, she openly stated that “Islam disgusts me,” claiming the comment was “completely sensible” and not Islamophobic. Additionally, Hopkins is a big supporter of banning burqas in the UK and has labelled Islamic culture as homophobic.

April 2015: Hopkins published a series of tweets on April 7, 2015, implying that individuals with dementia are “bed blockers” who take up precious hospital beds and that they would be better off dead. Leading Alzheimer's charities in the United Kingdom slammed her remarks.
