Eric Zemmour
Current Status: French political journalist, essayist, writer, and presenter
Biography
Eric Zemmour is a French essayist and journalist -turned-celebrity pundit born in 1958 at Montreuil in France after his Jewish family - originating from Algeria - moved to France during the Algerian war of independence. In 1979, he started his education at Science Po Paris where he obtained a degree in Public Administration. After that, he tried to enter the French National School of Administration but failed twice.
In 1986, he started working for the Quotidien de Paris as a journalist, then ten years later, he joined Le Figaro as a political journalist. Since his first appearance on French TV in 2003, he became one of the most outspoken critics of immigration and Islam in France. He has been convicted multiple times for hate speech incitement and is seen by many as an extreme right wing author and commentator. In October 2020, he was close to being taken to court again when he stated that young migrants from Africa and the Middle East were all killers, rapists and thieves.
Eric Zemmour is the author of some political books and controversial essays, such as “Le premier sexe” (The first sex) in 2006, in which he denounces the transition from a traditional patriarchal society to a modern feminised society and analyses the social and economic impact it could have in France. He also wrote a book called “Le suicide francais” (The French suicide) in 2014 where he says France is no longer a sovereign nation.
Since 2009, Zemmour has had a column in Le Figaro Magazine and appeared on the French TV on a variety of TV shows for many years such as On n’est pas couche on France 2 Channel from 2006 until 2011, Ça se dispute on I-Télé from 2003 to 2014, and Face à l'Info on CNews since 2019. In addition, since 2011, Zemmour hosts a weekly evening talk show - Zemmour et Naulleau - on Paris Premiere, together with Eric Naulleau. Eric has also hosted the radio show Z comme Zemmour for RTL from 2010 until 2019, before joining Yves Calvi’s morning news show as an analyst where he was ousted from debating one day after he stated “Islam is a totalitarian religion that supports individuals whether you like it or not. I have the right to say it” during the Zemmour and Naulleau show.
Zemmour has been discussed in news media as a potential candidate in the 2022 presidential election, even though he has not confirmed his intentions yet.
In September 2021, Zemmour called for a ban on Muslim names. He added that, if he was elected as President of France, he would restore a law introduced by Napoleon Bonapart that only allowed names from the Christian calendar of saints and those from ancient history.

Evidence of Hate Speech/Incitement:
October 2021: In an interaction with a Muslim woman wearing the hijab in the streets of the French city of Drancy, Zemmour asked the woman to remove her hijab to prove that “she is free”. Zemmour criticised the wearing of the hijab in Western countries and considers it as an act of the “submission” of women in Islam.
September 2020: On his daily TV show in September 2020, Zemmour stated that unaccompanied foreign minors should be expelled from France, calling them “thieves,” “killers” and “rapists.”
September 2016: during the RTL show, Zemmour says Islam is incompatible with French values, that people should understand that Islam and Islamism are exactly the same, and that France should remove Islam from the country.
March 2013: When invited on BFMTV to talk about his book “The first sex” and asked whether power should stay in the hands of men, he replied: “Of course it does, otherwise power dissipates. Women are regents, it’s always been this way in French history. They don’t express power, they don’t incarnate power, that’s how it is.”
